Modern Rubik's Cube DIY

Do you remember the Rubik's Cube? I've yet to complete one. Little Empty Room has made a modern version and I love it. Who wouldn't want to complete this? I might have another go..

Marble, black, white, wood and gold. Great combination and of course trendy in fashion and interiors at the moment.

You'll also find plenty of other DIY projects on this blog.

Have a great day!

Tuesday Tips - DIY VASE

So this Tuesday Tip is a very simple DIY vase. This used to be a glass jar filled with black olives. Instead of taking the glass jar to the bottle bank, I removed the label and decided to do something with it. Not sure if you call this recycling or upcycling or both!

What you need:
A recycled glass jar
A napkin (or a piece of fabric)
String
Scissors

I folded the napkin slightly to make it the right size for my jar.

Then add some string to keep the napkin in place.

VoilĂ !

I think it would look great on a large party table with lots of jars in different sizes.
Can you picture it?!

I've got some exciting news to share with you tomorrow..

Tuesday Tips - DIY clothing rail

This Tuesday Tip is a DIY that doesn't require a lot of time. To make this clothing rail all you need is a coffee table leg and some screwsNot only is this DIY quick, it's inexpensive too.

This is a great way of displaying a few nice things in your bedroom. I think it could work in a hallway too. It would also look great in a clothes or furniture shop. How would I use this clothing rail in a furniture shop? I would display blankets on the coat hangers.

If you don't have copper coat hangers you can easily spray paint some standard ones with some copper spray paint. It's not more complicated than that.

Next weeks tip is also a quick and inexpensive.

Tuesday Tips - ART DIY

Now, I'm certainly not an artist and a lot of you probably feel the same way, but it doesn't mean we can't have a go at making things. This kind of art - we can all do! It's so simple and can add a lot to a room - colour and / or pattern!

You need:

- plywood or canvas
- paint (tester pots or leftovers will do)
- masking tape
- roller or paint brush
- ruler or spirit level

If you think this is too difficult, but still want to try why not do something like this?!

Last year, in France, I made something similar (click here to see my DIY). It was really easy to do and it added a bit of something to our living room.

As our topic is art today I've found a video for you to watch. Are you ready for 4 minutes of pure inspiration?! I love it! Installation by Juanan Requena. If you have an empty wall, well here's what to do with it!

Good, isn't it?!

Workspace - DIY painted plywood

I while back I bought a large sheet of plywood and placed it behind my desk.  It looked ok, but it didn't really inspire me, so I decided to make a quick change.

Workspace inspire black pineapple

With some leftover paint from our bedroom wall, I painted a square light grey. The lines have to be really straight, so I used masking tape and also a set square It's really very simple, but it gives a nice effect with a bit of colour on the plywood.

Workspace inspire black pineapple

Do you like my black pineapple?! I used a real one and some matt black spray paint. The
pineapple project cost me £1.75 and some strange looks from the neighbours..
(A man walked past and said - that looks really cool!)

I found the cool white lamp for £9 in B&Q. Bargain! The triangle used to be a part of a game we played as children. I found it in my old things when I was in Norway. I gave it a quick new look with some black paint. The string lights are from Granit

The grey moodboard will be perfect for hanging inspiring messages and pictures on. I'm a lot more comfortable with these "colours"...

Tuesday Tips - IKEA hack by Elv's

Today's Tuesday Tips brings us to Scandinavian design lover Elv's. Her home is mostly white, black and grey, so when she saw the colourful PS collection by IKEA it wasn't quite for her. Saying that, she loved the shapes of this collection by Mathias HahnSo in true DIY fashion, Elvera got busy with some spray paint. She chose her favourite "colours" and completely transformed the vases and jars. They look like they were meant to live in this beautiful home. They fit in perfectly. What a great idea and a fantastic result!

It just goes to show that if something isn't the coulour you would like it to be, it shouldn't put you off. There are ways of getting what you want and it isn't always that difficult to change things. Is there an #ikeahacker in you?

The UK’s changing interest in DIY

I came a cross this interesting research by Ronseal. For more results click here. Apparently it was assumed that the UK has as a nation has become lazy when it comes to DIY. Well, this research proves that it's not true. We still love DIY. I'm not too surpirsed by the results, women appear to take on a stronger role than men, especially in the decision to start a DIY project. It's exactly how it is in our home, but then again I might have an unusual interest in DIY.

I do admit that I sometimes get frustrated with DIY projects, but I think it's important not to take on a project you don't think you can accomplish. If the project is too difficult then it just becomes a chore and it's not fun at all. Sometimes we do need help. Then again I do feel good when I manage to do something I didn't think I would be able to do.

I can think of plenty of fun DIY projects, but I guess a lot of them are not things we need and they defenitely couldn't be concidered as maintenance.

I guess my Decoration Frequency would be in the 3% part of this chart...  Well, I embrace change! Magnus has grown up to accept it. I think he kind of likes it too.

Do you have a DIY project at the moment? I've always got lots of projects I'm working on. I'm really pleased with my last project. My plywood shelf. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be - that's always a bonus!

Tuesday Tips - Window Room Divider

I've seen lots of different room dividers, but one of the nicest solutions I've seen I noticed in a shop in Sweden (I'll show you more of this beautiful shop later in the week).

A vintage window has been suspended from the ceiling with metal wires to act as a room divider. It breaks up the room, but you still get all the light and you can still see everything. It would work really well in a living room between the sofa and the dining table. The window would seperate the two areas without it feeling too enclosed.

Tuesday Tips - DIY wall chart

Hello, I’m Katrin from Daily perfect moment, and I’m very happy to be the guestblogger here today to share another DIY with you as a part of Hege's Tuesday Tips.

I love vintage objects, typography and black & white. So why not combine all of them in form of a nice wall decoration which looks like an old school’s roll-up wall chart?

I chose letters, because they are fun and easy to do, but of course you can paint whatever motive comes to mind. Print your motive and glue together for a full size template. You should be able to see the lines shine through the fabric. Trace the lines of your motive with a black pen and colour with acrylic paint. If you want to enhance the vintage look, you can add some tea- or coffee stains.

Take two rods, slightly longer than the width of your fabric, paint them black and tack the fabric to them. Attach a black rope to both ends of the rod for hanging onto the wall. Alternatively, your copy shop will help you with transferring photos to canvas or will print an advertising banner from any picture you want.

DIYable painting

I like everything in this room, but what caught my eye was the very DIYable painting on the wall. I think it would be quite easy to make and it's a good way of adding some colour to a room. You could of couse make this in any colour and any size and adapt it to your space. Very DIYable, if you ask me.

You need two tester pots of paint or some leftover paint and a canvas. To make the circle you need a large round tray or a drawing compass. I guess a thin paintbrush and some precision wouldn't be a bad idea either.. Fancy having a go?!

Marble Coaster DIY

As marble is very trendy these days, I've made a set of six marble coasters from some marble wall tiles I found at B&Q

I found these beautiful marble tiles and instantly thought - "coasters". (As you do, or is that just me?!) Here's what you need; tiles, scissors and furniture pads.

You start by cutting and ripping off the net on the back. You then stick on the furniture pads. I put one in each corner.

The coasters are perfect for a coffee break and even better with a little chocolate.

Have a nice day!

Soon Valentine's Day

It's Valentine's Day in a couple of days and I'm rummaging around in my Christmas decorations.. What's going on?! I'll explain.

I had an idea.. You can use your fairy lights to make a heart. All you need is some masking tape and a bit of patience and it works really well. We've now got a huge heart in our living room ready for Valentine's Day.

First find the midpoint of your lights and make that the middle of the heart. Then shape the two sides. This is perfect for parents who stay in, but still wants a bit of romance on Valentine's Day.

I also made some more cement candle holders. I made some before Christmas too, so you can find the step by step tutorial here. They are really easy to make.

You need quick drying cement for this project. This time I added some red paint for Valentine's Day. I made a line all around the candle holders with some masking tape and painted them.

I believe in little details when it comes to red, as I feel it makes it less tacky..

The cute stone heart is from the Spring /  Summer collection at B&Q.

Now all a girl has to do is wait and hope for some flowers..
and maybe some chocolates too..

Tuesday Tips - DIY plant pot holder

When I saw this swan in a Charity shop I had to have it. It cost me 80 pence. Birds and animals are increasingly popular and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this.

Instead of leaving the swan a dirty white colour I spray painted it with some copper spray paint. I had some paint left over from another project. You really don't need much paint for this.

The plan I had was to make my swan ornament into a plant pot holder. It's such an easy project and it turns this unwanted and not so pretty swan into something unique. The ugly duckling and all that..

The tiny Ivy plant cost me a pound, so in total this project cost about £3. Not bad for a cute little eye catcher on your window sill.

Hope you'll be going out searching for potential plant pot holders in Charity shops. You'll also be supporting a good cause, so that's a bonus! Hope to see you back next Tuesday for some more Tips!

ps! Spray paint -  be really careful and don't rush. The paint will run if you put it on too heavily and that doesn't look very nice, so put on a very thin coat. However, if you make a mistake - let it dry, sand it off with very fine sandpaper and try again. Always leave things to dry for at least 20 mins before you touch. I know it's hard, but it's worth the wait.
